Scrabble Club

Do you like playing Scrabble? Inspired by the success of the Library’s Friday night chess club, the Friends have started an evening Scrabble group. The group meets each Friday @6:30.

The Friends have sponsored two “Kids Only” book sales to benefit the Library’s Summer Reading Program. The day set aside for kids to pick up their reading program certificates, we will hold a second sale from 11 am-7 pm.

The Friends of the Guilderland Public Library was formed to give those of us devoted to libraries a vehicle to support our interests. We meet regularly with library administrators to discuss activities we might sponsor and services we might offer. In the past we have sponsored book discussion groups, musical events, and other enriching activities.

The Friends of the Library help to sponsor many of the library programs and projects with funds raised by membership dues, contributions and “Book Nook” earnings. They also are very much involved in helping to finance the Literacy Volunteers of America.

The Book Nook sells books from contributions and from those that are no longer on the library shelves. Those that don’t sell are taken by the volunteers to many different outlets: nursing homes, shelters, community centers, senior citizen centers and to small libraries in communities surrounding the Capital district where they often earn money for these facilities or are just donated. The main thing is to see that no worthy book is neglected and that people who do contribute their books to the library are assured their donations are all valued.

Book Nook sales:

August –- All books half price (except children’s and Nearly New and Notable)

September –- Classics and Literature (half price or less, as marked)

October –- Mysteries ( half price, just in time for Halloween!)

Book donations are accepted year round; donations can be placed in the bin across from the circulation desk. Previous arrangements should be made for the donation of large collections of books. No dusty, musty books, textbooks, or Reader’s Digest condensed books. Those books that are not added to the collection are given to the Friends for possible sale in The Book Nook.

If you share our interests, we encourage you to join the Friends and to participate actively. We meet monthly at 10am on the third Saturday of each month.

Future Friends Meetings:

Saturday, September 16, 10:15

Saturday, October 21, tentative date for Annual Meeting

For further information please call the library at 456-2400 and leave a message for Maggie Oldendorf. Sign-up forms are available at the Circulation desk.
