Almost faster than you could say XboX 360, the Guilderland Public Library’s new collection of console video games started flying off the shelves.
As of noon last Saturday, more than half of the extensive selection of games had been borrowed. They became available the day before when the Library opened its doors at 10 am, and the inquiries started immediately. But the real traffic started coming in after school:
“You mean I can borrow these for free?” Yes.
“This game will work on my PS2 at home?” Yes.
“What do I need to do to get one of these games?” This last question, from a young person of high-school age, was the one Guilderland’s Teen Services Librarian Trevor Oakley was primed for.
“Oh, all you need is a library card,” he replied casually.
“How do I get one of those?” the patron asked.
“Just fill this out, and we’ll get you a card,” said Oakley handing over a Library Card Application Form. The patron walked away, pen in-hand, to fill out the card.
“That’s one of the things we had hoped for,” Oakley said, indicating the soon-to-be borrower. “That these games will bring new patrons into the Library so they can see what else - besides these console games - we offer. A Library Card is the gateway to all we have here. Books, CDs, and now … “ he paused, watching another young patron browsing the selection, “console video games.”
The Guilderland Public Library is the first in the Upper Hudson Library System to make these XboX, XboX 360, PlayStation 2 (PS2), Nintendo Wii and Gamecube games available for loan. The games are loaned for a week; the collection is next to the Teen Services desk.
