Jazz. It’s “America’s classical music,” and it’s got a character, sound, and history all its own.
And now it’s more accessible than ever thanks to a great series of discussions the Guilderland Public Library has planned for April and May.
Combining both learning and enrichment, this series is led by Guilderland resident and jazz aficionado Thomas Pierce who provides an entertaining and enlightening grounding in the appreciation of jazz.
The program will culminate in a wonderful concert, “A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald,” featuring the immensely popular Sonny & Perley Quartet.
Thomas Pierce is a long-time music reviewer for both print and online jazz review publications. He has led jazz-appreciation and education programs throughout the Capital District and has co-hosted several local jazz radio programs. Registration is required for the four programs; please call 456-2400 x 7. The concert is open to all.
- April 4, 7pm: The Pioneers – Vocal legends including Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan
- April 18, 7pm: Classic Passed Artists – Lesser-known but influential artists such as Mel Tormé and Etta Jones
- May 2, 7pm: Keepers of the Flame – Living vocalists such as Nancy Wilson and Freddy Cole
- May 16, 7pm: Contemporary Luminaries – Young jazz vocalists including Diana Krall and Peter Cincotti
On Saturday, May 19 at 2pm, the immensely popular Sonny & Perley Quartet will perform “A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald,” the songs of Ella Fitzgerald, one of the great pioneers of the jazz vocal tradition and the focus of Mr. Pierce’s first lecture. The Sonny & Perley Quartet features pianist Sonny Daye, vocalist Perley Rousseau, drummer Ted MacKensie, and bass player Tom Charlap.
Come for the music, come for the new-found knowledge, but be there. You don’t want to miss this.
This program is made possible in part through Community Arts$Grants, a program funded through the State and Local Partnership Program of the New York State Council of the Arts, a state agency, and The Arts Center of the Capital Region.
