GPL Celebrates 1967, the Summer of Love

The Guilderland Public Library's 50th Anniversary celebration continues! The next event calls back to 1967 , the Summer of Love, when the Library celebrated ten years of service to the community.

We'll begin our 1967 retrospective with a concert on Thursday, July 26, at 7 pm, by the Beatles tribute band "Imagining Lennon Live." Recalling the music and images of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band -- the Beatles' eighth album, released on June 1, 1967 -- this concert will delight Beatles fans of every stripe.

We'll mark the events of 1967 with a Friday-night presentation that provides a contemporary perspective on everything from the Vietnam War to the Cold War, and cultural events from the release of the Doors' self-titled album to the Oscar-winning movie "In the Heat of the Night."

Saturday afternoon caps our 1967 weekend with a 2 pm showing of The Jungle Book. Bring the kids to watch this Disney feature in which Baloo the Bear and Bagheera the Panther have a difficult time trying to convince a boy to leave the jungle for human civilization.

So find your granny glasses and best tie-dye t-shirt, and join the party.

Just a reminder that this 1967-fest is just part of the larger celebration. Save these dates to enjoy our decade-specific occasions that illustrate how the Library and the Guilderland community have grown over the years.

The series will culminate on November 16 & 17 with a “Looking Back, Looking Beyond” weekend that explores where the Library will be in another 50 years.
