NEWS RELEASE

Let’s Party Like it's 1977

The Guilderland Public Library's 50th Anniversary series celebrates 1977, when the Library marked 20 years of service to the community.

It was the Year of "Saturday Night Fever," Jimmy Carter, "Star Wars," "Roots," the Apple II, and disco, disco, disco … So, come join the party!

Disco Party
Thursday, August 23, 7:30 pm to closing

Dig out the platform shoes, put on your lime-green polyester leisure suit, don your reflective sunglasses, and join Thursday Night's Disco Party at "Guil's Disco," the Guilderland Public Library's One-Night-Only Disco Celebration of 1977. (Or, just come as you are.)

It's going to be a retro blast as we play "Name that Disco Tune," hosted by Disco DJ Scott McNelis. The fun gets a thematic twist as we (once again) learn to "Do the Hustle."

The Disco opens at 7:30 pm, but come early as we anticipate another capacity crowd. (Remember what happened with the Beatles Live concert we had in June.)

Special “Big Screen” Showing of 1977's "Star Wars"
Saturday, August 25, 2 pm

In 1977, George Lucas blew a galaxy-wide hole in movie-dom's space/time continuum when he released "Star Wars," a film Roger Ebert called "entertainment so direct and simple that all of the complications of the modern movie seem to vaporize." Adding catchphrases to our language, from "May the Force be with you" to "I'd rather kiss a Wookie," this movie introduced us to a whole new range of popular characters including Luke Skywalker and C-3PO, and sent Harrison Ford's movie career into hyperspace.

Come to this Saturday Matinee, and see this film as it was meant to be seen: On the Big Screen. There will be popcorn and snacks, and plenty of places to get comfy.

Have you seen our displays?

Boomer Girls: remember that favorite doll you had, or that favorite book you "borrowed" from your mom? And Boomer Boys, remember your Lionel set? (Have your kids even seen it?) What about the Erector set? Or the Chemistry set with which you nearly destroyed the garage? They're here on display at the Guilderland Public Library; come by and see all the toys you miss.

Starting August 17, we'll have an array of "Star Wars" memorabilia for you to see. From miniature Storm Troopers to Millennium Falcon models, they'll be here for you to see.
